Of these five ponds, only one is natural, that of Saint-Bonnet,
The others - Tronçais, Saloup and Morat - were created by man to meet the needs of the forges, as was the Pirot pond for the Berry canal.
The first pond created by Nicolas Rambourg for his ironworks in 1789, it cuts across the Sologne. Reserved for angling. It has a surface area of 18 hectares.
Its name recalls the legend of the Loup de Mazières, a lord who took pleasure in martyring monks. Created at the same time as Tronçais by Nicolas Rambourg. With a surface area of 12 hectares, Saloup is a private pond.
Nicolas Rambourg's third book, l'étang de Morat is now a private pond. Covering 12 hectares, it is close to the commune of Saint-Bonnet-Tronçais. It was created after 1806.
The largest of the forest's ponds, with a surface area of 70 hectares. Dug on the Marmande stream between 1842 and 1852 to supply the Berry canal.
